What is Panic Attack?
Panic attacks (also called anxiety attacks) are sudden periods of intense fear that may include palpitations, sweating, trembling, shortness of breath and a sense of impending doom. Panic attacks usually peak in 10-20 minutes, but they can last much longer and may recur throughout the day.
Everyone feels anxious at times. But
if you've had recurrent, unexpected panic attacks and spent long periods in
constant fear of another attack, you may have a condition called panic
disorder.
Panic disorder is a type of mental illness. It's often misunderstood and incorrectly labeled as a personality disorder or assault on the nervous system. However, it can be treated effectively with medications and psychotherapy.
Although panic attacks themselves aren't life-threatening, they can be frightening and significantly affect your quality of life. Panic disorder isn't a condition that you can cure yourself from, but treatments are available to ease symptoms and reduce further anxiety.
If you have panic attack symptoms, seek medical help as soon as possible. Panic attacks, while intensely uncomfortable, are not dangerous. But panic attacks are hard to manage on your own, and they may get worse without treatment.
The exact cause of panic attacks is unknown, but researchers believe that the tendency to have them may be inherited from one's parents. Panic attacks may also result from stressful or emotional events and traumatic life experiences.
When you are having a panic attack, your body is reacting to the stress. Stress can be caused by a number of factors. This can include coping with difficult situations, being in a crowd or meeting new people and being unable to get out of an uncomfortable situation. At times severe stress can lead to panic attacks, but even if you do not experience these attacks often, they can still have serious consequences on your health and wellbeing. Anxiety disorders such as agoraphobia, social anxiety disorder and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are often linked to panic attacks and can cause further stress in your life.
