Loneliness is the feeling of being alone, regardless of the amount of social contact. Social isolation is a lack of social connections and interactions. Loneliness has many causes and effects, but it can be overcome with social support and new connections.

 


Loneliness and social isolation in older adults are serious public health risks affecting a significant number of people in the United States. These conditions place individuals at risk for premature mortality, falls, cognitive decline, and other adverse health outcomes.  People living alone have a higher likelihood of experiencing these problems than those who live with others, or with pets.

Social isolation and loneliness are both related to chronic health issues that can shorten your life. Studies have shown social isolation and loneliness are bad for your health and can increase your risk of premature death from all causes - even rivaling the risks of smoking, obesity, and physical inactivity. One study found that people with good social relationships have a 29 percent lower chance of heart disease and a 32 percent lower risk of stroke than people with poor social relationships. Another study found that loneliness was associated with higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide.

The report emphasized loneliness among vulnerable seniors, including immigrants; lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations; minorities; and victims of elder abuse. It also points out that the literature base for these populations is small and that further research is needed to identify risks, consequences, and appropriate measures.
